“This is the first treatment to be shown to reduce mortality in patients with COVID-19 requiring oxygen or ventilator support,” said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “This is great news and I congratulate the Government of the UK, the University of Oxford, and the many hospitals and patients in the UK who have contributed to this lifesaving scientific breakthrough.”

The steroid drug Dexamethasone is available since the 1960s, the drug is used to reduce inflammation in many conditions. These conditions include inflammatory disorders and certain cancers.

The drug has only been proven successful in critically ill patients, not ones with milder disease. Critically ill patients include people who need oxygen or ventilators or hospitalization.

For patients on ventilators, it cut the risk of death from 40% to 28%.
