Central Morocco has been struck by a powerful earthquake, resulting in over 1,000 casualties, as reported by the interior ministry of the country. The earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.8, caused panic in Marrakesh and other urban centers, prompting people to flee to the streets.

A significant number of fatalities occurred in remote mountainous regions that are challenging to access. The royal palace has announced a three-day period of national mourning in response to the disaster. The earthquake occurred shortly after 23:00 local time, with a relatively shallow depth of 71km (44 miles) southwest of Marrakesh, according to data from the US Geological Survey. Disturbing video footage captures the destruction of buildings and streets strewn with debris.
