Since the reopening of cinemas in 2018, Saudi Arabia’s cinema sector has experienced significant growth, boasting 627 screens across 69 theaters in a country with a population of approximately 32.2 million. The forum participants delved into proposals aimed at further enhancing the Saudi film industry. These suggestions included fostering collaboration between the government and public sectors to promote local talent, bolstering infrastructure to attract investments, and encouraging movie enthusiasts to opt for theater experiences rather than alternative platforms.

The discussions also shed light on the global screenings of Saudi films, emphasizing the industry’s expansion both within the kingdom and beyond its borders. The initiative to reopen cinemas in April 2018 marked a pivotal moment in Saudi Arabia’s transformation, aligning with its ambitious plan to diversify the economy away from oil dependence.

The General Commission for Audiovisual Media (GCAM) underscored the significance of the cinema sector in Saudi Arabia, claiming it as the largest in the region. With over 64,000 seats dispersed across 69 cinemas in 20 cities, the sector’s growth reflects a concerted effort to carve a niche for Saudi films on the global stage. As the industry continues to evolve, proposals for collaboration and strategic development aim to propel Saudi cinema to new heights.
