Whatsapp shares your data with Facebook and we all know this has happened to us on many occasions. But did you ever imagine why this is happening? We all wonder why I am seeing ads when I was talking to my friend about a specific thing. Many people have different theories on what is happening, or if Whatsapp is safe and private, and many other discussions. So let’s have a look at what data WhatsApp share with Facebook to understand a bit more. Please note this blog is not against any company or to scare you, but this blog is created to educate and share useful information.
Whatsapp shares your data with Facebook – But for what reason?
First of all why WhatsApp share data with Facebook as these are two different platforms. SO the simple answer to this is that “Facebook Owns WhatsApp” which means the management of WhatsApp company is actually Facebook. The second doubt which people have is if their chats are publically available and not safe. And the answer to that is “WhatsApp is a secure Chat and Call Platform” so it’s much safer than other products in the market like IMO and others. Also, to give a bit of relief WhatsApp is owned by a technology giant like Facebook and monitored very carefully by external compliance bodies.
Now let’s talk about the real question, what data or information is shared between the two platforms. For this, we had a look at the Whatsapp FAQ guide which is available via this link. And here are some important points which you must know:
- The reason why Whatsapp share data for any reason is answered. Whatsapp shares information to receive services like “infrastructure, technology, and systems that help us provide and improve WhatsApp and to keep WhatsApp and the other Facebook Companies safe and secure.” They also explained this further by saying that it helps WhatsApp to provide a better user experience, reliable performance, security, remove spam accounts, and combating abusive activity.
- However, the important part is Whatsapp says “Connect your WhatsApp experience with Facebook Company Products. Today, Facebook does not use your WhatsApp account information to improve your Facebook product experiences or provide you more relevant Facebook ad experiences on Facebook. We’re always working on new ways to improve how you experience WhatsApp and the other Facebook Company Products you use.” These products may include Instagram as that is also owned by Facebook.
- Whatsapp has mentioned several times in their FAQs that they do share Whatsapp data to show you relevant Facebook ads.

The comment by Android Authority clearly sums up everything and this is what you can take from this blog. “There isn’t much detail in WhatsApp’s new privacy section, but there aren’t any shocking revelations, either. The chat service is outlining functionality you’d likely expect. Still, this is a reminder that WhatsApp is just one part of a larger Facebook ecosystem, and that your data won’t necessarily stay within the service — worth noting, even if your data won’t travel very far.
