Saudi Flag Shines on Matterhorn Mountain in the Swiss Alps

Matterhorn Mountain

Waqar Naseem Wamiq, Riyadh – The famous Swiss peak of Matterhorn was shining on April 17th, 2020 when it was illuminated with the graceful green flag of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia featuring in white an Arabic inscription and a sword.

The Arabic inscription on the flag, written in the calligraphic Thuluth script. The Shahada Kalima Tayyaba or Islamic declaration of faith.

(لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله – There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah). The green of the flag represents Islam and the sword stands for the strictness in applying justice.

The projection of the Saudi Arabian flag on Matterhorn was in solidarity with The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and with the GCC countries during the Novel Corona Virus COVID-19 pandemic.

The projection of the flag carried out on April 17th on the famous Swiss Mountain Matterhorn organized by the Zermatt tourism board with artist Gerry Hostetter.

Later, The Zermatt tourism board posted the photo on their Twitter handle taken by the photographer Michael Kessler with the following message, ” Many Arab countries suffer from the coronavirus. We give hope and strength to the people of the GCC countries and the many expats living there: The Matterhorn shines for them tonight. Together we will overcome the crisis”.

The Zermatt tourism board announced the project on their official website explains, “Light is hope! In this sense, the Matterhorn is illuminated daily during the Coronavirus pandemic. With this light projection, Zermatt wants to give people a sign of hope and solidarity in these difficult times. The village shows solidarity with all the people who are currently suffering. Also, grateful to all those who are helping to overcome the crisis”.

Matterhorn Mountain

The Matterhorn is a mountain of the Alps, straddling the main watershed and border between Switzerland and Italy. It is a large, near-symmetric pyramidal peak in the extended Monte Rosa area of the Pennine Alps, whose summit is 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) high, making it one of the highest summits in the Alps and Europe. The four steep faces, rising above the surrounding glaciers, face the four compass points and are split by the Hörnli, Furggen, Leone/Lion, and Zmutt ridges.

The mountain overlooks the Swiss town of Zermatt, in the Canton if Valais, to the north-east and the Italian town of Breuil-Cervinia in the Aosta valley to the south just east of the Matterhorn is Theodul pass, the main passage between the two valleys on its north and south sides, and a trade route since the Roman era.
