A flash flood originating from the mountains of southwestern Saudi Arabia has led to a tragic incident in Jizan province, where part of a bridge was swept away, resulting in one fatality on Saturday, according to state media reports.

Incident Details

State television news channel Al-Ekhbariya broadcasted images showing the aftermath of the flood. Two vehicles were caught in the floodwaters, with one vehicle being severely damaged by the collapsed bridge support. The bridge collapse occurred at a critical crossroads inland from the Red Sea port city of Jizan, injuring several people.

Ongoing Weather Warnings

The National Center for Meteorology has issued warnings indicating that more heavy rainfall is expected in Jizan province. Thunderstorms are forecasted, particularly in the mountainous regions, which could exacerbate the flooding situation.

Climatic Conditions in Jizan

Jizan province is known for its contrasting climates. The narrow coastal plain along the Red Sea is one of the hottest areas in Saudi Arabia, experiencing extreme temperatures. In contrast, the inland mountains, which reach elevations of up to 3,000 meters (10,000 feet), have a much cooler climate with significant rainfall, even during the summer months.

This severe weather event underscores the climatic diversity of Jizan and highlights the challenges of managing natural disasters in regions with varied topographies and weather patterns.

Conclusion

The flash flood and subsequent bridge collapse in Jizan province have resulted in tragic loss and injuries, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in the face of severe weather. Authorities and residents are urged to remain cautious and adhere to weather advisories to mitigate further risks.
